knight of the Round Table

Sir Lionel

Bors's brother, left to be beaten so that a stranger could be saved — and he never forgave it.

Lionel is captured and being flogged with thorns when Bors, riding past, sees at the same moment a woman about to be raped a little further on. Bors can only reach one. He chooses the woman. Lionel survives, and the grievance rots: he later attacks his own brother and kills a knight and a hermit who try to stop him, and Bors will not raise a sword against him. It is the best moral problem in the Grail quest and the cycle refuses to resolve it comfortably.
