Words

Malory’s English

The 635 entries below are the glossary the editors printed at the end of the Caxton text, lifted verbatim. They appear in the reader too, where each word is marked the first time it turns up in a chapter.

One caution, and it matters. This is a dictionary: it records a sense a wordcan carry in this book, not a translation of every instance. Malory uses “wood” to mean mad and also to mean timber. Context decides, and the gloss is a hint rather than a ruling.

Le Morte d'Arthur, Vol. II (Project Gutenberg #1252) — the editors' glossary — Public domain.

Six entries in the printed glossary carry no definition at all and are omitted; two damaged lines were repaired and the repairs are recorded in the build. Sixteen high-frequency words were dropped from the reader’s marking — “saw”, “took”, “where”, “much” and the like — because their archaic sense is the minority use, and a confidently wrong gloss on hundreds of ordinary sentences is worse for a reader than no gloss at all.
