Act 5, Scene 1

On board Pericles' ship, off Mytilene. A close pavilion

  1. [Enter Gower.]
  2. Gower
  3. 1945 Marina thus the brothel 'scapes, and chances
  4. 1946 Into an honest house, our story says.
  5. 1947 She sings like one immortal, and she dances
  6. 1948 As goddess-like to her admired lays;
  7. 1949 Deep clerks she dumbs; and with her neeld composes
  8. 1950 Nature's own shape, of bud, bird, branch, or berry,
  9. 1951 That even her art sistrs the natural roses;
  10. 1952 Her inkle, silk, twin with the rubied cherry:
  11. 1953 That pupils lacks she none of noble race,
  12. 1954 Who pour their bounty on her; and her gain
  13. 1955 She gives the cursed bawd. Here we her place;
  14. 1956 And to her father turn our thoughts again,
  15. 1957 Where we left him, on the sea. We there him lost;
  16. 1958 Whence, driven before the winds, he is arrived
  17. 1959 Here where his daughter dwells; and on this coast
  18. 1960 Suppose him now at anchor. The city strived
  19. 1961 God Neptune's annual feast to keep: from whence
  20. 1962 Lysimachus our Tyrian ship espies,
  21. 1963 His banners sable, trimm'd with rich expense;
  22. 1964 And to him in his barge with fervour hies.
  23. 1965 In your supposing once more put your sight
  24. 1966 Of heavy Pericles; think this his bark:
  25. 1967 Where what is done in action, more, if might,
  26. 1968 Shall be discover'd; please you, sit and hark.
  27. [Exit.]
  28. [Enter two Sailors, one belonging to the Tyrian vessel, the other to the barge; to them Helicanus.]
  29. [To the Sailor of Mytilene.]
  30. Tyrian Sailor
  31. 1969 Where is lord Helicanus? he can resolve you.
  32. 1970 O, here he is.
  33. 1971 Sir, there's a barge put off from Mytilene,
  34. 1972 And in it is Lysimachus the governor,
  35. 1973 Who craves to come aboard. What is your will?
  36. Helicanus
  37. 1974 That he have his. Call up some gentlemen.
  38. Tyrian Sailor
  39. 1975 Ho, gentlemen! my lord calls.
  40. [Enter two or three Gentlemen.]
  41. First Gentleman
  42. 1976 Doth your lordship call?
  43. Helicanus
  44. 1977 Gentlemen, there s some of worth would come aboard;
  45. 1978 I pray ye, greet them fairly.
  46. [The Gentlemen and the two Sailors descend, and go on board the barge.]
  47. Helicanus
  48. 1979 Enter, from thence, Lysimachus and Lords; with the Gentlemen and
  49. 1980 the two sailors.
  50. Tyrian Sailor
  51. 1981 Sir,
  52. 1982 This is the man that can, in aught you would,
  53. 1983 Resolve you.
  54. Lysimachus
  55. 1984 Hail, reverend sir! the gods preserve you!
  56. Helicanus
  57. 1985 And you, sir, to outlive the age I am,
  58. 1986 And die as I would do.
  59. Lysimachus
  60. 1987 You wish me well.
  61. 1988 Being on shore, honouring of Neptune's triumphs,
  62. 1989 Seeing this goodly vessel ride before us,
  63. 1990 I made to it, to know of whence you are.
  64. Helicanus
  65. 1991 First, what is your place?
  66. Lysimachus
  67. 1992 I am the governor of this place you lie before.
  68. Helicanus
  69. 1993 Sir,
  70. 1994 Our vessel is of Tyre, in it the king;
  71. 1995 A man who for this three months hath not spoken
  72. 1996 To any one, nor taken sustenance
  73. 1997 But to prorogue his grief.
  74. Lysimachus
  75. 1998 Upon what ground is his distemperature?
  76. Helicanus
  77. 1999 'Twould be too tedious to repeat;
  78. 2000 But the main grief springs from the loss
  79. 2001 Of a beloved daughter and a wife.
  80. Lysimachus
  81. 2002 May we not see him?
  82. Helicanus
  83. 2003 You may;
  84. 2004 But bootless is your sight: he will not speak
  85. 2005 To any.
  86. Lysimachus
  87. 2006 Yet let me obtain my wish.
  88. Helicanus
  89. 2007 Behold him.
  90. [Pericles discovered.]
  91. Helicanus
  92. 2008 This was a goodly person.
  93. 2009 Till the disaster that, one mortal night,
  94. 2010 Drove him to this.
  95. Lysimachus
  96. 2011 Sir king, all hail! the gods preserve you!
  97. 2012 Hail, royal sir!
  98. Helicanus
  99. 2013 It is in vain; he will not speak to you.
  100. First Lord
  101. 2014 Sir,
  102. 2015 We have a maid in Mytilene, I durst wager,
  103. 2016 Would win some words of him.
  104. Lysimachus
  105. 2017 'Tis well bethought.
  106. 2018 She questionless with her sweet harmony
  107. 2019 And other chosen attractions, would allure,
  108. 2020 And make a battery through his deafen'd parts,
  109. 2021 Which now are midway stopp'd:
  110. 2022 She is all happy as the fairest of all,
  111. 2023 And, with her fellow maids, is now upon
  112. 2024 The leafy shelter that abuts against
  113. 2025 The island's side.
  114. [Whispers a Lord, who goes off in the barge of Lysimachus.]
  115. Helicanus
  116. 2026 Sure, all's effectless; yet nothing we'll omit
  117. 2027 That bears recovery's name. But, since your kindness
  118. 2028 We have stretch'd thus far, let us beseech you
  119. 2029 That for our gold we may provision have,
  120. 2030 Wherein we are not destitute for want,
  121. 2031 But weary for the staleness.
  122. Lysimachus
  123. 2032 O, sir, a courtesy
  124. 2033 Which if we should deny, the most just gods
  125. 2034 For every graff would send a catepillar,
  126. 2035 And so afflict our province. Yet once more
  127. 2036 Let me entreat to know at large the cause
  128. 2037 Of your king's sorrow.
  129. Helicanus
  130. 2038 Sit, sir, I will recount it to you:
  131. 2039 But, see, I am prevented.
  132. [Re-enter, from the barge, Lord, with Marina, and a young Lady.]
  133. Lysimachus
  134. 2040 O, here is
  135. 2041 The lady that I sent for. Welcome, fair one!
  136. 2042 Is't not a goodly presence?
  137. Helicanus
  138. 2043 She's a gallant lady.
  139. Lysimachus
  140. 2044 She's such a one, that, were I well assured
  141. 2045 Came of a gentle kind and noble stock,
  142. 2046 I'ld wish no better choice, and think me rarely wed.
  143. 2047 Fair one, all goodness that consists in bounty
  144. 2048 Expect even here, where is a kingly patient:
  145. 2049 If that thy prosperous and artificial feat
  146. 2050 Can draw him but to answer thee in aught,
  147. 2051 Thy sacred physic shall receive such pay
  148. 2052 As thy desires can wish.
  149. Marina
  150. 2053 Sir, I will use
  151. 2054 My utmost skill in his recovery,
  152. 2055 Provided
  153. 2056 That none but I and my companion maid
  154. 2057 Be suffer'd to come near him.
  155. Lysimachus
  156. 2058 Come, let us leave her,
  157. 2059 And the gods make her prosperous!
  158. [Marina sings.]
  159. Lysimachus
  160. 2060 Mark'd he your music?
  161. Marina
  162. 2061 No, nor look'd on us,
  163. Lysimachus
  164. 2062 See, she will speak to him.
  165. Marina
  166. 2063 Hail, sir! my lord, lend ear.
  167. Pericles
  168. 2064 Hum, ha!
  169. Marina
  170. 2065 I am a maid,
  171. 2066 My lord, that ne'er before invited eyes,
  172. 2067 But have been gazed on like a cornet: she speaks,
  173. 2068 My lord, that, may be, hath endured a grief
  174. 2069 Might equal yours, if both were justly weigh'd.
  175. 2070 Though wayward fortune did malign my state,
  176. 2071 My derivation was from ancestors
  177. 2072 Who stood equivalent with mighty kings:
  178. 2073 But time hath rooted out my parentage,
  179. 2074 And to the world and awkward casualties
  180. 2075 Bound me in servitude.
  181. [Aside.]
  182. Marina
  183. 2076 I will desist;
  184. 2077 But there is something glows upon my cheek,
  185. 2078 And whispers in mine ear 'Go not till he speak.'
  186. Pericles
  187. 2079 My fortunes — parentage — good parentage —
  188. 2080 To equal mine! — was it not thus? what say you?
  189. Marina
  190. 2081 I said, my lord, if you did know my parentage.
  191. 2082 You would not do me violence.
  192. Pericles
  193. 2083 I do think so. Pray you, turn your eyes upon me.
  194. 2084 You are like something that — What country-woman?
  195. 2085 Here of these shores?
  196. Marina
  197. 2086 No, nor of any shores:
  198. 2087 Yet I was mortally brought forth, and am
  199. 2088 No other than I appear.
  200. Pericles
  201. 2089 I am great with woe, and shall deliver weeping.
  202. 2090 My dearest wife was like this maid, and such a one
  203. 2091 My daughter might have been: my queen's square brows;
  204. 2092 Her stature to an inch; as wand-like straight;
  205. 2093 As silver-voiced; her eyes as jewel-like
  206. 2094 And cased as richly; in pace another Juno;
  207. 2095 Who starves the ears she feeds, and makes them hungry,
  208. 2096 The more she gives them speech. Where do you live?
  209. Marina
  210. 2097 Where I am but a stranger: from the deck
  211. 2098 You may discern the place.
  212. Pericles
  213. 2099 Where were you bred?
  214. 2100 And how achieved you these endowments, which
  215. 2101 You make more rich to owe?
  216. Marina
  217. 2102 If I should tell my history, it would seem
  218. 2103 Like lies disdain'd in the reporting.
  219. Pericles
  220. 2104 Prithee, speak:
  221. 2105 Falseness cannot come from thee; for thou look'st
  222. 2106 Modest as Justice, and thou seem'st a palace
  223. 2107 For the crown'd Truth to dwell in: I will believe thee,
  224. 2108 And make my senses credit thy relation
  225. 2109 To points that seem impossible; for thou look'st
  226. 2110 Like one I loved indeed. What were thy friends?
  227. 2111 Didst thou not say, when I did push thee back —
  228. 2112 Which was when I perceived thee — that thou earnest
  229. 2113 From good descending?
  230. Marina
  231. 2114 So indeed I did.
  232. Pericles
  233. 2115 Report thy parentage. I think thou said'st
  234. 2116 Thou hadst been toss'd from wrong to injury,
  235. 2117 And that thou thought'st thy griefs might equal mine,
  236. 2118 If both were open'd.
  237. Marina
  238. 2119 Some such thing,
  239. 2120 I said, and said no more but what my thoughts
  240. 2121 Did warrant me was likely.
  241. Pericles
  242. 2122 Tell thy story;
  243. 2123 If thine consider'd prove the thousandth part
  244. 2124 Of my endurance, thou art a man, and I
  245. 2125 Have suffer'd like a girl: yet thou dost look
  246. 2126 Like Patience gazing on kings' graves, and smiling
  247. 2127 Extremity out of act. What were thy friends?
  248. 2128 How lost thou them? Thy name, my most kind virgin?
  249. 2129 Recount, I do beseech thee: come, sit by me.
  250. Marina
  251. 2130 My name is Marina.
  252. Pericles
  253. 2131 O, I am mock'd,
  254. 2132 And thou by some incensed god sent hither
  255. 2133 To make the world to laugh at me.
  256. Marina
  257. 2134 Patience, good sir,
  258. 2135 Or here I'll cease.
  259. Pericles
  260. 2136 Nay, I'll be patient.
  261. 2137 Thou little know'st how thou dost startle me,
  262. 2138 To call thyself Marina.
  263. Marina
  264. 2139 The name
  265. 2140 Was given me by one that had some power,
  266. 2141 My father, and a king.
  267. Pericles
  268. 2142 How! a king's daughter?
  269. 2143 And call'd Marina?
  270. Marina
  271. 2144 You said you would believe me;
  272. 2145 But, not to be a troubler of your peace,
  273. 2146 I will end here.
  274. Pericles
  275. 2147 But are you flesh and blood?
  276. 2148 Have you a working pulse? and are no fairy?
  277. 2149 Motion! Well; speak on. Where were you born?
  278. 2150 And wherefore call'd Marina?
  279. Marina
  280. 2151 Call'd Marina
  281. 2152 For I was born at sea.
  282. Pericles
  283. 2153 At sea! what mother?
  284. Marina
  285. 2154 My mother was the daughter of a king;
  286. 2155 Who died the minute I was born,
  287. 2156 As my good nurse Lychorida hath oft
  288. 2157 Deliver'd weeping.
  289. Pericles
  290. 2158 O, stop there a little!
  291. [Aside.]
  292. Pericles
  293. 2159 This is the rarest dream that e'er dull sleep
  294. 2160 Did mock sad fools withal: this cannot be:
  295. 2161 My daughter's buried. Well: where were: you bred?
  296. 2162 I'll hear you more, to the bottom of your story,
  297. 2163 And never interrupt you.
  298. Marina
  299. 2164 You scorn: believe me, 'twere best I did give o'er.
  300. 2165 -
  301. Pericles
  302. 2166 I will believe you by the syllable
  303. 2167 Of what you shall deliver. Yet, give me leave:
  304. 2168 How came you in these parts? where were you bred?
  305. Marina
  306. 2169 The king my father did in Tarsus leave me;
  307. 2170 Till cruel Cleon, with his wicked wife,
  308. 2171 Did seek to murder me: and having woo'd
  309. 2172 A villain to attempt it, who having drawn to do 't,
  310. 2173 A crew of pirates came and rescued me;
  311. 2174 Brought me to Mytilene. But, good sir.
  312. 2175 Whither will you have me? Why do you weep? It may be,
  313. 2176 You think me an impostor: no, good faith;
  314. 2177 I am the daughter to King Pericles,
  315. 2178 If good King Pericles be.
  316. Pericles
  317. 2179 Ho, Helicanus!
  318. Helicanus
  319. 2180 Calls my lord?
  320. Pericles
  321. 2181 Thou art a grave and noble counsellor,
  322. 2182 Most wise in general: tell me, if thou canst,
  323. 2183 What this maid is, or what is like to be,
  324. 2184 That thus hath made me weep?
  325. Helicanus
  326. 2185 I know not; but
  327. 2186 Here is the regent, sir, of Mytilene
  328. 2187 Speaks nobly of her.
  329. Lysimachus
  330. 2188 She would never tell
  331. 2189 Her parentage; being demanded that,
  332. 2190 She would sit still and weep.
  333. Pericles
  334. 2191 O Helicanus, strike me, honour'd sir;
  335. 2192 Give me a gash, put me to present pain;
  336. 2193 Lest this great sea of joys rushing upon me
  337. 2194 O'erbear the shores of my mortality,
  338. 2195 And drown me with their sweetness. O, come hither,
  339. 2196 Thou that beget'st him that did thee beget;
  340. 2197 Thou that wast born at sea, buried at Tarsus,
  341. 2198 And found at sea again! O Helicanus,
  342. 2199 Down on thy knees, thank the holy gods as loud
  343. 2200 As thunder threatens us: this is Marina.
  344. 2201 What was thy mother's name? tell me but that,
  345. 2202 For truth can never be confirm'd enough,
  346. 2203 Though doubts did ever sleep
  347. Marina
  348. 2204 First, sir, I pray,
  349. 2205 What is your title?
  350. Pericles
  351. 2206 I am Pericles of Tyre: but tell me now
  352. 2207 My drown'd queen's name, as in the rest you said
  353. 2208 Thou hast been godlike perfect,
  354. 2209 The heir of kingdoms and another like
  355. 2210 To Pericles thy father.
  356. Marina
  357. 2211 Is it no more to be your daughter than
  358. 2212 To say my mother's name was Thaisa?
  359. 2213 Thaisa was my mother, who did end
  360. 2214 The minute I began.
  361. Pericles
  362. 2215 Now, blessing on thee! rise; thou art my child.
  363. 2216 Give me fresh garments. Mine own, Helicanus;
  364. 2217 She is not dead at Tarsus, as she should have been,
  365. 2218 By savage Cleon: she shall tell thee all;
  366. 2219 When thou shalt kneel, and justify in knowledge
  367. 2220 She is thy very princess. Who is this?
  368. Helicanus
  369. 2221 Sir, 'tis the governor of Mytilene,
  370. 2222 Who, hearing of your melancholy state,
  371. 2223 Did come to see you.
  372. Pericles
  373. 2224 I embrace you.
  374. 2225 Give me my robes. I am wild in my beholding.
  375. 2226 O heavens bless my girl! But, hark, what music?
  376. 2227 Tell Helicanus, my Marina, tell him
  377. 2228 O'er, point by point, for yet he seems to doubt,
  378. 2229 How sure you are my daughter. But, what music?
  379. Helicanus
  380. 2230 My lord, I hear none.
  381. Pericles
  382. 2231 None!
  383. 2232 The music of the spheres! List, my Marina.
  384. Lysimachus
  385. 2233 It is not good to cross him; give him way
  386. Pericles
  387. 2234 Rarest sounds! Do ye not hear?
  388. Lysimachus
  389. 2235 My lord, I hear.
  390. [Music.]
  391. Pericles
  392. 2236 Most heavenly music!
  393. 2237 It nips me unto listening, and thick slumber
  394. 2238 Hangs upon mine eyes: let me rest.
  395. [Sleeps.]
  396. Lysimachus
  397. 2239 A pillow for his head:
  398. 2240 So, leave him all. Well, my companion friends,
  399. 2241 If this but answer to my just belief,
  400. 2242 I'll well remember you.
  401. [Exeunt all but Pericles.]
  402. [Diana appears to Pericles as in a vision.]
  403. Diana
  404. 2243 My temple stands in Ephesus: hie thee thither,
  405. 2244 And do upon mine altar sacrifice.
  406. 2245 There, when my maiden priests are met together,
  407. 2246 Before the people all,
  408. 2247 Reveal how thou at sea didst lose thy wife:
  409. 2248 To mourn thy crosses, with thy daughter's, call
  410. 2249 And give them repetition to the life.
  411. 2250 Or perform my bidding, or thou livest in woe:
  412. 2251 Do it, and happy; by my silver bow!
  413. 2252 Awake, and tell thy dream.
  414. [Disappears.]
  415. Pericles
  416. 2253 Celestial Dian, goddess argentine,
  417. 2254 I will obey thee. Helicanus!
  418. [Re-enter Helicanus, Lysimachus, and Marina.]
  419. Helicanus
  420. 2255 Sir?
  421. Pericles
  422. 2256 My purpose was for Tarsus, there to strike
  423. 2257 The inhospitable Cleon; but I am
  424. 2258 For other service first: toward Ephesus
  425. 2259 Turn our blown sails; eftsoons I'll tell thee why
  426. [To Lysimachus.]
  427. Pericles
  428. 2260 Shall we refresh us, sir, upon your shore,
