Act 5, Scene 4

Country nearDunsinane: a Wood in view.

  1. [Enter, with drum and colours, Malcolm, old Siward and his Son, Macduff, Menteith, Caithness, Angus, Lennox, Ross, and Soldiers, marching.]
  2. Malcolm
  3. 2134 Cousins, I hope the days are near at hand
  4. 2135 That chambers will be safe.
  5. Menteith
  6. 2136 We doubt it nothing.
  7. Siward
  8. 2137 What wood is this before us?
  9. Menteith
  10. 2138 The wood of Birnam.
  11. Malcolm
  12. 2139 Let every soldier hew him down a bough,
  13. 2140 And bear't before him; thereby shall we shadow
  14. 2141 The numbers of our host, and make discovery
  15. 2142 Err in report of us.
  16. Soldiers
  17. 2143 It shall be done.
  18. Siward
  19. 2144 We learn no other but the confident tyrant
  20. 2145 Keeps still in Dunsinane, and will endure
  21. 2146 Our setting down before't.
  22. Malcolm
  23. 2147 'Tis his main hope:
  24. 2148 For where there is advantage to be given,
  25. 2149 Both more and less have given him the revolt;
  26. 2150 And none serve with him but constrained things,
  27. 2151 Whose hearts are absent too.
  28. Macduff
  29. 2152 Let our just censures
  30. 2153 Attend the true event, and put we on
  31. 2154 Industrious soldiership.
  32. Siward
  33. 2155 The time approaches,
  34. 2156 That will with due decision make us know
  35. 2157 What we shall say we have, and what we owe.
  36. 2158 Thoughts speculative their unsure hopes relate;
  37. 2159 But certain issue strokes must arbitrate:
  38. 2160 Towards which advance the war.
  39. [Exeunt, marching.]
