Act 5, Scene 3
Dunsinane. A Room in the Castle.
- [Enter Macbeth, Doctor, and Attendants.]
- Macbeth
- 2063 Bring me no more reports; let them fly all:
- 2064 Till Birnam wood remove to Dunsinane
- 2065 I cannot taint with fear. What's the boy Malcolm?
- 2066 Was he not born of woman? The spirits that know
- 2067 All mortal consequences have pronounc'd me thus,—
- 2068 "Fear not, Macbeth; no man that's born of woman
- 2069 Shall e'er have power upon thee."—Then fly, false thanes,
- 2070 And mingle with the English epicures:
- 2071 The mind I sway by, and the heart I bear,
- 2072 Shall never sag with doubt nor shake with fear.
- [Enter a Servant.]
- Macbeth
- 2073 The devil damn thee black, thou cream-fac'd loon!
- 2074 Where gott'st thou that goose look?
- Servant
- 2075 There is ten thousand—
- Macbeth
- 2076 Geese, villain?
- Servant
- 2077 Soldiers, sir.
- Macbeth
- 2078 Go prick thy face and over-red thy fear,
- 2079 Thou lily-liver'd boy. What soldiers, patch?
- 2080 Death of thy soul! those linen cheeks of thine
- 2081 Are counsellors to fear. What soldiers, whey-face?
- Servant
- 2082 The English force, so please you.
- Macbeth
- 2083 Take thy face hence.
- [Exit Servant.]
- Macbeth
- 2084 Seyton!—I am sick at heart,
- 2085 When I behold—Seyton, I say!- This push
- 2086 Will chair me ever or disseat me now.
- 2087 I have liv'd long enough: my way of life
- 2088 Is fall'n into the sear, the yellow leaf;
- 2089 And that which should accompany old age,
- 2090 As honour, love, obedience, troops of friends,
- 2091 I must not look to have; but, in their stead,
- 2092 Curses, not loud but deep, mouth-honour, breath,
- 2093 Which the poor heart would fain deny, and dare not.
- 2094 Seyton!—
- [Enter Seyton.]
- Seyton
- 2095 What's your gracious pleasure?
- Macbeth
- 2096 What news more?
- Seyton
- 2097 All is confirm'd, my lord, which was reported.
- Macbeth
- 2098 I'll fight till from my bones my flesh be hack'd.
- 2099 Give me my armour.
- Seyton
- 2100 'Tis not needed yet.
- Macbeth
- 2101 I'll put it on.
- 2102 Send out more horses, skirr the country round;
- 2103 Hang those that talk of fear.—Give me mine armour.—
- 2104 How does your patient, doctor?
- Doctor
- 2105 Not so sick, my lord,
- 2106 As she is troubled with thick-coming fancies,
- 2107 That keep her from her rest.
- Macbeth
- 2108 Cure her of that:
- 2109 Canst thou not minister to a mind diseas'd;
- 2110 Pluck from the memory a rooted sorrow;
- 2111 Raze out the written troubles of the brain;
- 2112 And with some sweet oblivious antidote
- 2113 Cleanse the stuff'd bosom of that perilous stuff
- 2114 Which weighs upon the heart?
- Doctor
- 2115 Therein the patient
- 2116 Must minister to himself.
- Macbeth
- 2117 Throw physic to the dogs,—I'll none of it.—
- 2118 Come, put mine armour on; give me my staff:—
- 2119 Seyton, send out.—Doctor, the Thanes fly from me.—
- 2120 Come, sir, despatch.—If thou couldst, doctor, cast
- 2121 The water of my land, find her disease,
- 2122 And purge it to a sound and pristine health,
- 2123 I would applaud thee to the very echo,
- 2124 That should applaud again.—Pull't off, I say.—
- 2125 What rhubarb, senna, or what purgative drug,
- 2126 Would scour these English hence? Hear'st thou of them?
- Doctor
- 2127 Ay, my good lord; your royal preparation
- 2128 Makes us hear something.
- Macbeth
- 2129 Bring it after me.—
- 2130 I will not be afraid of death and bane,
- 2131 Till Birnam forest come to Dunsinane.
- [Exeunt all except Doctor.]
- Doctor
- 2132 Were I from Dunsinane away and clear,
- 2133 Profit again should hardly draw me here.
- [Exit.]
