Act 5, Scene 3

Dunsinane. A Room in the Castle.

  1. [Enter Macbeth, Doctor, and Attendants.]
  2. Macbeth
  3. 2063 Bring me no more reports; let them fly all:
  4. 2064 Till Birnam wood remove to Dunsinane
  5. 2065 I cannot taint with fear. What's the boy Malcolm?
  6. 2066 Was he not born of woman? The spirits that know
  7. 2067 All mortal consequences have pronounc'd me thus,—
  8. 2068 "Fear not, Macbeth; no man that's born of woman
  9. 2069 Shall e'er have power upon thee."—Then fly, false thanes,
  10. 2070 And mingle with the English epicures:
  11. 2071 The mind I sway by, and the heart I bear,
  12. 2072 Shall never sag with doubt nor shake with fear.
  13. [Enter a Servant.]
  14. Macbeth
  15. 2073 The devil damn thee black, thou cream-fac'd loon!
  16. 2074 Where gott'st thou that goose look?
  17. Servant
  18. 2075 There is ten thousand—
  19. Macbeth
  20. 2076 Geese, villain?
  21. Servant
  22. 2077 Soldiers, sir.
  23. Macbeth
  24. 2078 Go prick thy face and over-red thy fear,
  25. 2079 Thou lily-liver'd boy. What soldiers, patch?
  26. 2080 Death of thy soul! those linen cheeks of thine
  27. 2081 Are counsellors to fear. What soldiers, whey-face?
  28. Servant
  29. 2082 The English force, so please you.
  30. Macbeth
  31. 2083 Take thy face hence.
  32. [Exit Servant.]
  33. Macbeth
  34. 2084 Seyton!—I am sick at heart,
  35. 2085 When I behold—Seyton, I say!- This push
  36. 2086 Will chair me ever or disseat me now.
  37. 2087 I have liv'd long enough: my way of life
  38. 2088 Is fall'n into the sear, the yellow leaf;
  39. 2089 And that which should accompany old age,
  40. 2090 As honour, love, obedience, troops of friends,
  41. 2091 I must not look to have; but, in their stead,
  42. 2092 Curses, not loud but deep, mouth-honour, breath,
  43. 2093 Which the poor heart would fain deny, and dare not.
  44. 2094 Seyton!—
  45. [Enter Seyton.]
  46. Seyton
  47. 2095 What's your gracious pleasure?
  48. Macbeth
  49. 2096 What news more?
  50. Seyton
  51. 2097 All is confirm'd, my lord, which was reported.
  52. Macbeth
  53. 2098 I'll fight till from my bones my flesh be hack'd.
  54. 2099 Give me my armour.
  55. Seyton
  56. 2100 'Tis not needed yet.
  57. Macbeth
  58. 2101 I'll put it on.
  59. 2102 Send out more horses, skirr the country round;
  60. 2103 Hang those that talk of fear.—Give me mine armour.—
  61. 2104 How does your patient, doctor?
  62. Doctor
  63. 2105 Not so sick, my lord,
  64. 2106 As she is troubled with thick-coming fancies,
  65. 2107 That keep her from her rest.
  66. Macbeth
  67. 2108 Cure her of that:
  68. 2109 Canst thou not minister to a mind diseas'd;
  69. 2110 Pluck from the memory a rooted sorrow;
  70. 2111 Raze out the written troubles of the brain;
  71. 2112 And with some sweet oblivious antidote
  72. 2113 Cleanse the stuff'd bosom of that perilous stuff
  73. 2114 Which weighs upon the heart?
  74. Doctor
  75. 2115 Therein the patient
  76. 2116 Must minister to himself.
  77. Macbeth
  78. 2117 Throw physic to the dogs,—I'll none of it.—
  79. 2118 Come, put mine armour on; give me my staff:—
  80. 2119 Seyton, send out.—Doctor, the Thanes fly from me.—
  81. 2120 Come, sir, despatch.—If thou couldst, doctor, cast
  82. 2121 The water of my land, find her disease,
  83. 2122 And purge it to a sound and pristine health,
  84. 2123 I would applaud thee to the very echo,
  85. 2124 That should applaud again.—Pull't off, I say.—
  86. 2125 What rhubarb, senna, or what purgative drug,
  87. 2126 Would scour these English hence? Hear'st thou of them?
  88. Doctor
  89. 2127 Ay, my good lord; your royal preparation
  90. 2128 Makes us hear something.
  91. Macbeth
  92. 2129 Bring it after me.—
  93. 2130 I will not be afraid of death and bane,
  94. 2131 Till Birnam forest come to Dunsinane.
  95. [Exeunt all except Doctor.]
  96. Doctor
  97. 2132 Were I from Dunsinane away and clear,
  98. 2133 Profit again should hardly draw me here.
  99. [Exit.]
