Act 5, Scene 8

Another part of the plain

  1. [Enter HECTOR.]
  2. Hector
  3. 3310 Most putrified core so fair without,
  4. 3311 Thy goodly armour thus hath cost thy life.
  5. 3312 Now is my day's work done; I'll take good breath:
  6. 3313 Rest, sword; thou hast thy fill of blood and death!
  7. [Disarms.]
  8. [Enter ACHILLES and his Myrmidons.]
  9. Achilles
  10. 3314 Look, Hector, how the sun begins to set;
  11. 3315 How ugly night comes breathing at his heels;
  12. 3316 Even with the vail and dark'ning of the sun,
  13. 3317 To close the day up, Hector's life is done.
  14. Hector
  15. 3318 I am unarm'd; forego this vantage, Greek.
  16. Achilles
  17. 3319 Strike, fellows, strike; this is the man I seek.
  18. [HECTOR falls.]
  19. Achilles
  20. 3320 So, Ilion, fall thou next! Now, Troy, sink down;
  21. 3321 Here lies thy heart, thy sinews, and thy bone.
  22. 3322 On, Myrmidons, and cry you an amain
  23. 3323 'Achilles hath the mighty Hector slain.'
  24. [A retreat sounded.]
  25. Achilles
  26. 3324 Hark! a retreat upon our Grecian part.
  27. Myrmidon
  28. 3325 The Trojan trumpets sound the like, my lord.
  29. Achilles
  30. 3326 The dragon wing of night o'erspreads the earth
  31. 3327 And, stickler-like, the armies separates.
  32. 3328 My half-supp'd sword, that frankly would have fed,
  33. 3329 Pleas'd with this dainty bait, thus goes to bed.
  34. [Sheathes his sword.]
  35. Achilles
  36. 3330 Come, tie his body to my horse's tail;
  37. 3331 Along the field I will the Trojan trail.
  38. [Exeunt.]
