Act 5, Scene 2

Before the walls of Athens.

  1. [Enter two other SENATORS with a MESSENGER.]
  2. First Senator
  3. 2288 Thou hast painfully discover'd; are his files
  4. 2289 As full as thy report?
  5. Messenger
  6. 2290 I have spoke the least.
  7. 2291 Besides, his expedition promises
  8. 2292 Present approach.
  9. Second Senator
  10. 2293 We stand much hazard if they bring not Timon.
  11. Messenger
  12. 2294 I met a courier, one mine ancient friend,
  13. 2295 Whom, though in general part we were oppos'd,
  14. 2296 Yet our old love had a particular force,
  15. 2297 And made us speak like friends. This man was riding
  16. 2298 From Alcibiades to Timon's cave
  17. 2299 With letters of entreaty, which imported
  18. 2300 His fellowship i' the cause against your city,
  19. 2301 In part for his sake mov'd.
  20. [Enter the other SENATORS, from TIMON.]
  21. First Senator
  22. 2302 Here come our brothers.
  23. Third Senator
  24. 2303 No talk of Timon, nothing of him expect.
  25. 2304 The enemies' drum is heard, and fearful scouring
  26. 2305 Doth choke the air with dust. In, and prepare.
  27. 2306 Ours is the fall, I fear; our foes the snare.
  28. [Exeunt.]
