Act 5, Scene 4

Another part of the field.

  1. [Alarum. Enter, fighting, Soldiers of both armies; then Brutus, young Cato, Lucilius, and Others.]
  2. Marcus Brutus
  3. 2466 Yet, countrymen, O, yet hold up your heads!
  4. Young Cato
  5. 2467 What bastard doth not? Who will go with me?
  6. 2468 I will proclaim my name about the field:—
  7. 2469 I am the son of Marcus Cato, ho!
  8. 2470 A foe to tyrants, and my country's friend;
  9. 2471 I am the son of Marcus Cato, ho!
  10. [Charges the enemy.]
  11. Marcus Brutus
  12. 2472 And I am Brutus, Marcus Brutus, I;
  13. 2473 Brutus, my country's friend; know me for Brutus!
  14. [Exit, charging the enemy. Cato is overpowered, and falls.]
  15. Lucilius
  16. 2474 O young and noble Cato, art thou down?
  17. 2475 Why, now thou diest as bravely as Titinius;
  18. 2476 And mayst be honour'd, being Cato's son.
  19. First Soldier
  20. 2477 Yield, or thou diest.
  21. Lucilius
  22. 2478 Only I yield to die:
  23. 2479 There is so much that thou wilt kill me straight;
  24. [Offering money.]
  25. Lucilius
  26. 2480 Kill Brutus, and be honour'd in his death.
  27. First Soldier
  28. 2481 We must not. A noble prisoner!
  29. Second Soldier
  30. 2482 Room, ho! Tell Antony, Brutus is ta'en.
  31. First Soldier
  32. 2483 I'll tell the news. Here comes the General.—
  33. [Enter Antony.]
  34. First Soldier
  35. 2484 Brutus is ta'en, Brutus is ta'en, my lord.
  36. Mark Antony
  37. 2485 Where is he?
  38. Lucilius
  39. 2486 Safe, Antony; Brutus is safe enough:
  40. 2487 I dare assure thee that no enemy
  41. 2488 Shall ever take alive the noble Brutus:
  42. 2489 The gods defend him from so great a shame!
  43. 2490 When you do find him, or alive or dead,
  44. 2491 He will be found like Brutus, like himself.
  45. Mark Antony
  46. 2492 This is not Brutus, friend; but, I assure you,
  47. 2493 A prize no less in worth. Keep this man safe,
  48. 2494 Give him all kindness; I had rather have
  49. 2495 Such men my friends than enemies. Go on,
  50. 2496 And see whether Brutus be alive or dead;
  51. 2497 And bring us word unto Octavius' tent
  52. 2498 How everything is chanced.
  53. [Exeunt.]
