Act 4, Scene 3

Another room in the Castle.

  1. [Enter King,attended.]
  2. King Claudius
  3. 2602 I have sent to seek him and to find the body.
  4. 2603 How dangerous is it that this man goes loose!
  5. 2604 Yet must not we put the strong law on him:
  6. 2605 He's lov'd of the distracted multitude,
  7. 2606 Who like not in their judgment, but their eyes;
  8. 2607 And where 'tis so, the offender's scourge is weigh'd,
  9. 2608 But never the offence. To bear all smooth and even,
  10. 2609 This sudden sending him away must seem
  11. 2610 Deliberate pause: diseases desperate grown
  12. 2611 By desperate appliance are reliev'd,
  13. 2612 Or not at all.
  14. [Enter Rosencrantz.]
  15. King Claudius
  16. 2613 How now! what hath befall'n?
  17. Rosencrantz
  18. 2614 Where the dead body is bestow'd, my lord,
  19. 2615 We cannot get from him.
  20. King Claudius
  21. 2616 But where is he?
  22. Rosencrantz
  23. 2617 Without, my lord; guarded, to know your pleasure.
  24. King Claudius
  25. 2618 Bring him before us.
  26. Rosencrantz
  27. 2619 Ho, Guildenstern! bring in my lord.
  28. [Enter Hamlet and Guildenstern.]
  29. King Claudius
  30. 2620 Now, Hamlet, where's Polonius?
  31. Hamlet
  32. 2621 At supper.
  33. King Claudius
  34. 2622 At supper! where?
  35. Hamlet
  36. 2623 Not where he eats, but where he is eaten: a certain
  37. 2624 convocation of politic worms are e'en at him. Your worm is your
  38. 2625 only emperor for diet: we fat all creatures else to fat us, and
  39. 2626 we fat ourselves for maggots: your fat king and your lean beggar
  40. 2627 is but variable service,—two dishes, but to one table: that's
  41. 2628 the end.
  42. King Claudius
  43. 2629 Alas, alas!
  44. Hamlet
  45. 2630 A man may fish with the worm that hath eat of a king, and eat
  46. 2631 of the fish that hath fed of that worm.
  47. King Claudius
  48. 2632 What dost thou mean by this?
  49. Hamlet
  50. 2633 Nothing but to show you how a king may go a progress through
  51. 2634 the guts of a beggar.
  52. King Claudius
  53. 2635 Where is Polonius?
  54. Hamlet
  55. 2636 In heaven: send thither to see: if your messenger find him not
  56. 2637 there, seek him i' the other place yourself. But, indeed, if you
  57. 2638 find him not within this month, you shall nose him as you go up
  58. 2639 the stairs into the lobby.
  59. King Claudius
  60. 2640 Go seek him there.
  61. [To some Attendants.]
  62. Hamlet
  63. 2641 He will stay till you come.
  64. [Exeunt Attendants.]
  65. King Claudius
  66. 2642 Hamlet, this deed, for thine especial safety,—
  67. 2643 Which we do tender, as we dearly grieve
  68. 2644 For that which thou hast done,—must send thee hence
  69. 2645 With fiery quickness: therefore prepare thyself;
  70. 2646 The bark is ready, and the wind at help,
  71. 2647 The associates tend, and everything is bent
  72. 2648 For England.
  73. Hamlet
  74. 2649 For England!
  75. King Claudius
  76. 2650 Ay, Hamlet.
  77. Hamlet
  78. 2651 Good.
  79. King Claudius
  80. 2652 So is it, if thou knew'st our purposes.
  81. Hamlet
  82. 2653 I see a cherub that sees them.—But, come; for England!—
  83. 2654 Farewell, dear mother.
  84. King Claudius
  85. 2655 Thy loving father, Hamlet.
  86. Hamlet
  87. 2656 My mother: father and mother is man and wife; man and wife is
  88. 2657 one flesh; and so, my mother.—Come, for England!
  89. [Exit.]
  90. King Claudius
  91. 2658 Follow him at foot; tempt him with speed aboard;
  92. 2659 Delay it not; I'll have him hence to-night:
  93. 2660 Away! for everything is seal'd and done
  94. 2661 That else leans on the affair: pray you, make haste.
  95. [Exeunt Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.]
  96. King Claudius
  97. 2662 And, England, if my love thou hold'st at aught,—
  98. 2663 As my great power thereof may give thee sense,
  99. 2664 Since yet thy cicatrice looks raw and red
  100. 2665 After the Danish sword, and thy free awe
  101. 2666 Pays homage to us,—thou mayst not coldly set
  102. 2667 Our sovereign process; which imports at full,
  103. 2668 By letters conjuring to that effect,
  104. 2669 The present death of Hamlet. Do it, England;
  105. 2670 For like the hectic in my blood he rages,
  106. 2671 And thou must cure me: till I know 'tis done,
  107. 2672 Howe'er my haps, my joys were ne'er begun.
  108. [Exit.]
